The Sky Castle (Mini-Micro Layout)
< Back to Micro Layouts
The Sky Castle is a very small 'out-of-the-box' micro layount,
measuring just 11" x 11".
It depicts a fantasy castle in an other world setting. There
is just a circle of Kato small radius rack surrounding it....
somewhat out of place one might say!
Built onto a piece of MDF board with small wooden frame base.
As usual, foam board was added to the board, and a small central
mound fashioned for the castle to sit atop.
Although small, it packs a lot of detail into the space. The
castle is made from the Metaclfe Castle Hall, Tower and Curtain
Walls, with additional scrath built walls and a small balcony
added. The outer castle that sits in one corner, uses the
left-over tower and walls plus more scratch building. All the
banners and flags were downloaded images from the internet,
somewhat downsized to fit. Lights are fitted into the main
castle building, the top tower bulb was painted red for a
lantern effect.
Of course there is a dragon! Any fantasy castle must have a
dragon, those are the rules! Having searched through several toy
shops and got nowhere, I turned to eBay and found a set of six
from China. The one used was exactly what I'd intended from the
start. It sits on top of a Covid swab stick.... Yes the dragon
had a minor operation to drill a hole up it's bum!!
The soldiers in the castle are metal wargaming miniatures
that each needed painting. To complete the scene, a few trees
and sheep grazing in one corner (a tasty nibble for the
dragon!).
For the back scene I generated an AI image, asking for a
fantasy scene with mountains, a lake and a very large moon. The
'totem' sign was also AI generated.
Unlike all my other boxes and micros, a PWM controller has
been fitted directly to the base, and again unlike all the
others, it is powered by a 9V battery, the box is velcro'd under
the base.
For our exhibition set-up, a pole will be fitted under the
base so that the castle will sit above all the boxes on
display..... hence 'The Sky Castle'
